The Beech Creek - Chimney Rock Loop Trail
This 12 mile loop trail is located near the Tallulah River just past Tate City. It is beyond the Georgia border into North Carolina. Trail access is at the "Glory Patch" where parking is on the left side of the road. This trail climbs through beautiful hardwood forest land with many ideal wildflower areas. The mountain has many large rock cliffs and the trail passes by the old abandoned Tate corundum mine and ore crusher / loading area. A couple of switchbacks later there is a short access trail to High Falls which is well worth the hike. The trail then works its way on up to Scaly Mountain and then loops down the Chimney Rock portion of the trail back down to the road at the Tallulah river.
This trail has lots of views of the creek as it follows the old mining road bed. |
A nice little waterfall on the trail. |
The trail passes by this old abandoned corundum mine (ore crusher/loading area). |
We found this oven bird nest complete with baby birds. The mother was happy when we left! These well hidden ground nests are rarely found, but we were taking a picture of a nearby wildflower when the mother flew out of the nest. (May 23, 2001) |
